24. dubna - Biomimikry
About us
The Laboratory of Biomimetic Engineering is a research group that was established in the year 2017 as a part of the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague. Our primary objective is to study and enhance natural solutions and designs in order to tackle the various modern-day challenges through the application of biomimetics.
It is noteworthy that many of the inventions that we witness around us today were initially inspired by living organisms such as microorganisms, plants, or animals. For instance, Velcro stripes, which are extensively used as fasteners, were developed by mimicking the structure of burrs, while self-cleaning surfaces that can repel water and other liquids mimic the hierarchical topology of the lotus leaf. Similarly, artificial neural networks, which have become an integral part of advanced computing, were inspired by the functioning of the human brain.
At present, biomimetics is being successfully employed in various fields such as material sciences to develop smart materials, in fluid flow to reduce drag, in target drug delivery through composite particulate systems, or as natural antibiotics. The potential applications of biomimetics are immense, and research in this field is opening up new avenues for sustainable development and innovation.
